In Jammu and Kashmir, a staggering 88% of pre-primary teachers lack professional training, according to recent official figures.¹ This means that only 11.8% of teachers at this level have the necessary qualifications. Breaking it down further, 9.1% of male teachers and 13.2% of female teachers are professionally qualified.

To put this into perspective, Jammu and Kashmir has the second-highest number of untrained teachers at the pre-primary and upper-primary levels in the country. Tamil Nadu tops the list, with only 22.3% of teachers trained to teach at the pre-primary level.

It’s worth noting that the situation improves at higher levels of education. For instance, 68.6% of primary school teachers, 72.5% of upper-primary teachers, and 87.5% of secondary school teachers have professional qualifications.
